The Revert Command

Sometimes you make small mistakes, and sometimes you make big ones. If, after several minutes of painting and editing, you decide that you want to return the entire image to its last saved appearance so that you can start over again, you can do one of two things:

  • Select the top step, technically referred to as a state, in the History palette. (Turn to “The History Palette” later in this chapter for more details.) Selecting the top step restores the image back to the way it appeared when you first opened it.

  • Choose FileRevert. Photoshop displays an Alert box to make sure that you didn’t choose the wrong command. If you click the Revert button or press Enter (Return on a Mac), the program reloads the image from disk and throws away all changes.

    Remember

You have an advantage in using the History palette rather than the File→Revert command. The History palette restores the original image regardless of whether you saved along the way, whereas File→Revert reloads the last saved version, which may include some undesired changes.

    Tip

Just in case you change your mind or your fingers slipped, you can undo File→Revert, so breathe easy. And if you’ve executed another command, don’t despair. The Revert command is recorded in the History palette as a state and can be deleted.
