Applying Color to Selection Innards

It’s time to move on to the other ways you can fill a selection outline in Photoshop:

  • To fill a selection with the Foreground color: Press Alt+Backspace (Option+Delete on a Mac).

  • To fill a selection with the Background color: Press Ctrl+Backspace (z+Delete on a Mac).

  • To fill the opaque part of a selection on a layer with the Foreground color while leaving the rest of the selection transparent: Press Shift+Alt+Backspace (Shift+Option+Delete on a Mac).

  • To fill the opaque area with the Background color: Press Ctrl+Shift+Backspace (z+Shift+Delete on a Mac).

    Remember

For more about layers, turn to Chapter 7, where I explain layers and transparency.

  • To display the Fill dialog box: Choose Edit→Fill. This menu option lets you fill the selection with color, a pattern, or history. (See Chapter 14 for more on history.)

  • To create a gradient (a gradual blend) between two or more colors: Drag with the Gradient tool.
