Chapter 9. Being Productive: Office Suites and Other Tools

We are at the dawn of the age where businesses and ordinary people are using Linux as their everyday computing platform. There have been Linux tools for word processing, making presentations, managing finances, personal calendars, and other such tasks for a long time. Productivity tools are now coming into their own, and more people are starting to recognize that. SUSE has always been in the forefront of desktop Linux, marketing the first Linux Office Suite in 1999. Based on the Applixware suite now produced by VistaSource, this suite didn't exactly set the world on fire, but marked the beginning of the Linux desktop revolution. There is hardly a task you can complete in Windows that cannot be done in Linux, and often you will find that your Linux application does it better, or faster, or easier. This chapter explores the office productivity applications included in SUSE Linux and shows you how to get started with them. Many of these applications install by default with the Office install option, and others can be added through YaST. All will make you a more productive user. |
