Chapter 9: Security and Privacy Architecture

Security and privacy of user, application, device, and network resources and data are increasingly important areas of network architecture and design. Security is integrated within all areas of the network and affects all other functions on the network. For the proper functioning of security within a network, it is crucial that the relationships between security mechanisms, as well as between the security architecture and other component architectures, be well understood.

Overlaying security onto a developed network was an acceptable approach in the past. Today, however, security must be integrated into the network from the beginning for the network to meet the needs of the users and for security to provide adequate protection.

9.1 Objectives

In this chapter, you will learn about various security mechanisms (e.g., physical security, protocol and application security, encryption/decryption, perimeter and remote access security), how to determine the relationships both between these mechanisms and between security and the other architectural components, and how to develop the security architecture.
