What's New

With Exchange Server2003, you can create two main types of applications by using the Software Developers Kit (SDK): collaborative applications and monitoring/management applications.

If you have developed applications for a previous version of Exchange, you are probably already familiar with the type of collaborative applications that you can create using Exchange technology. This covers a broad range of uses for everything from a simple help desk form to complex workflow and routing applications. A little later in this chapter, you'll look at these types of applications in detail and see what has changed between the SDK provided for Exchange Server 2000 and this version.

The second type of application you can create using the Exchange Server 2003 SDK is for the management and monitoring of your Exchange environment. Most of the functionality for these types of applications is provided through Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) providers and classes. The WMI interface provides the ability to monitor and manage Exchange components, including Mailboxes, stores, Public folders, connectors, and so on.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

For more information on WMI, visit http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/wmisdk/wmi/about_wmi.asp.

Also included in the management and monitoring applications are some of the applications you looked at in the previous chapter, including backup and restore applications created using the API that interfaces with the Exchange Storage Engine.

Regardless of whether you are creating a simple workflow application or a complex management console, the new Exchange Server 2003 SDK has something for everyone. You'll start your look at what's new with the SDK before you move on to the different types of applications you can develop.
