What's New

One of the key areas of improvement for Exchange 2003 has been the monitoring tools that track Exchange servers, clients, and messages. After the initial installation and configuration of an Exchange implementation, an Exchange administrator spends the majority of each day monitoring Exchange message flow and troubleshooting problems that occur.

Exchange 2000 had a number of tools for tracking messages and monitoring that were helpful to administrators. In Exchange 2003, these tools have been improved and expanded to include the features and functionality that were missing in previous versions.

Most notably, the server-monitoring tools that are available in Exchange 2003 have been improved. They now enable administrators to see "behind the scenes" so that they can diagnose problems that were difficult to pinpoint in Exchange 2000. Some of these problems include memory usage and configuration issues.

Likewise, the enhanced features that surround disaster recovery and Exchange backup and recovery make recovering individual Mailboxes easier and eliminate the need for numerous third-party products.

As a whole, administrators will be pleased with these improvements and more as they perform day-to-day maintenance. This chapter begins by looking at what's new or improved in the area of monitoring tools.
