Supported Systems

This book was written for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), although most examples work in Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), with differences noted in the text. Most examples work in older versions of Mac OS X, too.

The default shell for accounts created with Panther and Tiger is Bash. Examples are written assuming Bash. There's support for Tcsh (the default shell pre-Panther) via notes or separate projects. If you are running Tcsh, Project 1 shows you how to change your default shell to Bash.

Examples should work on any model of Mac. Although written for Client, they are largely applicable to Mac OS X Server too. Server has extra graphical tools to manage such things as user accounts, the Apache Web server, and FTP administration.

Although not essential, to get the most from Mac OS X, we recommend that you install the X11 windowing system and the Developer Tools. Both are optional installs and can be installed at any time.

To install X11, insert your original Mac OS X install disc; double-click the Optional Installs package; and follow the instructions, selecting X11 from the Applications set in the appropriate screen.

To install the Developer Tools, insert your original Mac OS X install disc, double-click first the Xcode Tools folder and then the Xcode Tools package, and follow the instructions.
