The Red Hat Linux software is available over the Internet. If you have a fast enough Internet connection, you can download Red Hat as a series of files, and install from your hard drive. You can also download the ISO image (which is an image of a CD-ROM) and use a CD-ROM writer to write the image to a blank CD-R (a recordable CD-ROM). You can then boot from this CD-ROM and install Linux.

Where to Purchase or Download

Your ability to purchase Linux on CD-ROM has been greatly expanded in the last two years . If you like "brick and mortar" stores, you can go to stores such as Best Buy, CompUSA, or Fry's. Call computer stores in your area to see whether they carry Linux.

Many online stores are available. A very small listing of sites that you can purchase from online is http://www.linuxmall.com, http://www.linuxcentral.com, http://www.redhat.com, or http://www.linuxdisk.com, which is a site my company runs. If you purchase directly from Red Hat, you get installation support directly from them.

If you want to download Linux free, Red Hat keeps a list of mirrors that carry their Linux distribution at http://www.redhat.com/download/mirror.html. My favorite sites are ftp.freesoftware.com, and ftp.redhat.com. A new site, http://www. linuxiso.org, might be a bit sluggish .

Currently, Compaq, Dell, and IBM either have or are working on programs that allow you to purchase Linux with their machines.
