Router Hardware Issues

The most infrequent cause of dropped calls, poor sound quality, and other Skype problems is your network router. That said, it is possible that your router is the root cause of certain problems that are difficult to diagnose and troubleshoot.

Although most routers work well with Skype, certain routers do not. People have reported problems using the following routers with Skype: D-Link 604 nonwireless, D-Link 614 wireless, and Linksys BEFSX41 non-wireless. There may be others as well. Check the Skype Forums and Knowledgebase for the most up-to-date information on hardware that does not work well with Skype.

If you are using a router that people have reported works poorly with Skype, or if you suspect that the problems you are having are related directly to your network hardware, the best alternative is to try a different router.

If you are using a router that should be compatible with Skype, and you suspect that the problems you are having are related to your network hardware, try resetting your router, upgrading router firmware, or reconfiguring your router to allow PC-to-phone communication. Refer to the technical documentation (or the vendor Web site) for your network hardware.
