CPU Overload

If you notice your computer acting sluggish or feeling hot to the touch, or you notice the battery draining quickly, Skype may be using too much of your CPU's processing power inadvertently because of a conflict with another application that is running.

This occasionally happens when sound software, such as Total Recorder, is installed and set up as the default I/O device for Skype.

To remedy CPU overload, try one or more of the following solutions:

1.

Change the I/O devices for your sound card or USB handset in the Skype preferences, or change the default Windows I/O device in the Windows Control Panel.

2.

Lower Skype's task priority (advanced users only):

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open Task Manager.

  • Navigate to the Processes tab.

  • Right-click Skype.exe, choose Set Priority from the context menu, and then lower Skype's task-priority level.
