Mac OS X

1.

Follow the detailed instructions for verifying your sound setup in Appendix C.

2.

If you are using an external microphone, make sure that it is connected properly to your computer.

Specifically, make sure that the microphone and headphone plugs are connected to the correct sockets.

3.

Verify that your microphone is working properly.

If your microphone does not appear to be working, check to see that the sound device is not muted and that the volume is turned up high enough.

If everything seems to be working on your Mac, but you still do not hear your own voice, try this:

4.

Choose Apple > System Preferences > Sound.

5.

Make sure that the appropriate microphone is selected, and see whether the input level changes when you speak into the microphone.

6.

If you do not see the appropriate microphone, headset, or handset displayed, try disconnecting and reconnecting it.

7.

If you are still having trouble, try adjusting the Skype automatic volume settings.

To do this, go to the sound-devices preference, and disable automating by unchecking the Enable Automating Sound Device Settings checkbox.

8.

Adjust the operating system's sound configuration:

  • Choose Apple > System Preferences > Sound.

  • Select Input.

  • Adjust the Input Volume slider to a minimum of 50 percent.

  • Talk into the microphone to see how well the sound input level is being registered. If the sound registers to a level less than 50 percent, increase the input volume.

9.

If you still having trouble, make sure that you have the most recent drivers for your sound card or sound output device.

Hardware manufacturers usually make this software available for downloading on their Web sites.

10.

If you are still having trouble, or you are getting error message 6101 or 6102, it's possible that another Mac OS X audio application has hijacked the sound card.

If you are running Virtual PC, software programs such as Total Recorder, Replay Audio Recorder, MP3 Dancer, and Windows XP Voice Recognition can interfere with Skype's operation as well.

11.

Shut down any applications that may be using your computer's sound system.

Try turning all of them on and then turning them back on one by one to determine which one may be in conflict with Skype. See the Skype Forums for more information.

12.

If you still are having trouble, try refreshing the connection settings (for advanced users only):

  • Close the Skype application.

  • Delete the file shared.xml, which will be rebuilt automatically when you run the Skype application next.

The most straightforward way to find and delete this file is from the Terminal window. Navigate to /Users/username/ Library/Application Support/Skype (replace user-name with the Mac OS X login name of the user running Skype), and delete the file.

  • Run Skype and log in.

13.

If that doesn't work, refer to the Skype Forums for the most recent troubleshooting information.

14.

Close the Skype application.
