You Can t Hear

You Can't Hear

If you can log into Skype but you can't hear sound, you get an error message, or you find that the volume is too soft, you can take a series of actions.

If you can't hear sound at all, or you get an error message, follow these steps:

1.

Check the sound output device.

2.

Make sure that your headset, speakers, and/or phone device are properly connected.

The most common problems are issues with physical connections. If you are using a headset, make sure that the speaker plug is plugged into the speaker jack. If you are using powered speakers, the speakers must be plugged in and turned on, and the volume must be turned up.

3.

Determine whether your headset, speakers, or phone device is working by playing music files or a DVD.

4.

Check the sound output volume.

Make sure that the sound output is not muted and that the volume is turned high enough for you to hear something.

If you get error code 6101 (Skype cannot find a sound output device that is set up properly on your computer) follow these steps:

1.

Make sure that your computer has audio hardware or a sound card.

Audio hardware is standard in most new computers.

2.

Make sure that you have the most recent software drivers for your sound card or sound output device.

If, for example, you have a USB phone that requires special software drivers, be sure that you have the latest drivers installed. Hardware manufacturers usually make this software available for downloading on their Web sites.

3.

Disable any software program that might have taken control of your sound card.

Software programs such as Total Recorder, Replay Audio Recorder, MP3 Dancer, and Windows XP Voice Recognition can interfere with Skype's operation.

4.

Check to make sure that the audio input device you are using is selected as the preferred audio input device.

Refer to the "Sound Setup" section in Appendix C for detailed instructions.

If you can't hear well, follow these steps:

1.

Make sure that the volume is turned up high enough on the computer.

2.

If you are using speakers or a headset with a volume control, make sure that the volume is turned up.

If these problems persist in Microsoft Windows XP, follow these steps:

1.

Go to the Properties window for the specific device.

2.

Activate every control.

3.

Make sure that each audio level is set properly.
