Make a Test Call

When you are done creating your new Skype account, it is a good idea to test your headset (or microphone and speakers) before you call someone. You can do this by making a test call to a special Skype answering service.

You will hear a recorded message, record your own voice, and listen back to it. Assuming that you have a connection to the Internet, here is how you make a test call:

1.

Start Skype, if it is not already running.

2.

Check that your headset, microphone (and speakers), or USB handset is plugged in properly.

If you are using a microphone and speakers or a headset with 1/8inch miniplugs, double-check that the microphone is plugged into the input jack and that the speakers (or headset) are plugged into the speaker output jack.

3.

Enter echo123 in the text box at the bottom of the Skype main window, and click the big green Call button (see Figure 4-8).

Alternatively, in Microsoft Windows, you can choose Tools > Options, click Sound Devices, and then click Make a Test Call to Skype Answering Machine.

If your speakers or headphones are working properly, you will hear ringing; then a prerecorded voice will ask you to leave a 10second message.

4.

Speak after the beep.

After 10 seconds, the message will be played back, assuming that everything is working properly. If you hear the prerecorded message and also your own recorded voice, you can safely assume that Skype is working properly.

If Skype is not working properly, you can do some things to remedy the situation before you attempt to use Skype:

  • If you hear nothing: Check to make absolutely sure that your headset or microphone is plugged into the correct jack and that your audio volume or volume control is set appropriately (not muted). Try making a test call again. If you still hear nothing, refer to Chapter 7 for more guidance and information.

  • If you hear something: If you hear the prerecorded voice but cannot hear your own voice in the playback, you need to make sure that your microphone is working or adjust the recording settings. See the next section, "Testing Your Microphone."

Note

To adjust the volume on your speakers, headset, or handset, start by adjusting the output volume (sound volume) in the Sound Control Panel or System Preferences for your operating system.
