Section 4.16. What are xApps?

4.16. What are xApps?

Even before SAP announced ESA in January 2003, SAP and its partners were using SAP NetWeaver to build composite applications known as xApps. Initially, xApp was an abbreviation for cross-application, or an application that implemented processes that spanned across systems of record. Over time, the x in xApps became dominant, and now this term is pronounced ex-apps. The unique feature of xApps is that they are created to be sold as products. In this regard, they are examples of what was formerly known as packaged composite applications .

SAP created several xApps, including SAP xApp Resource and Portfolio Management (SAP xRPM) for managing large portfolios of projects, and SAP xApp Product Definition (SAP xPD) for managing the product definition process. Partners created xApps such as SAP xApp Integrated Exploration and Production (SAP xIEP) for managing oil and gas exploration. Each xApp was created with early versions of the SAP Composite Application Framework (SAP CAF) supplemented by functionality from SAP NetWeaver. This first generation of xApps did not have the benefit of the infrastructure, such as the Enterprise Services Repository and other parts of SAP NetWeaver built especially to support ESA.
