Overcoming Doubts and Fears

Most often, even highly diverse and divided groups reach a clear conclusion when they follow this process. Why? Because everyone participated. Even if each person did not participate in each step, everyone understood the process and the integrity with which the smaller group fulfilled its responsibilities on their behalf. Thus, the final decision may not be everyone's first choice, but everyone can support it.

Some people express doubts, contending that unless they participate or review the information themselves, they can't trust the results. These people are second-guessers who can erode confidence and stall results. But involving them will build their trust in the process and, in turn, their support for the results. That's why you'll benefit from a clearly defined process with periodic involvement of all interested parties.

BE AN AGENT OF HOPE

When operating with a large group, don't allow time constraints or difficult dynamics to keep you from engaging everyone who has a stake in the issue or relevant information to offer. Use the process accordion style, and move back and forth between the large group and a smaller working group. Like a good accordionist playing a rousing polka, you can get all participants to join in and enjoy themselves. As they say, "No one's unhappy when they're doing the polka."
