12.1 Composability Among Specifications

The word "composable" is used quite frequently in the WS-* family of specifications to refer to the way that the specifications depend on each other. Previous attempts at trying to build large, complex specifications that define the whole stack of interoperability in an all-or-nothing fashion, such as ebXML, have been unable to garner the widespread adoption their early proponents had hoped for. The WS-* family of specifications is broken down into small, interconnected specifications, which are more easily understood and implemented by a broader range of vendors, large and small alike.
