Acknowledgments

Creating a book is too large a task for a single person. This book wouldn't exist if it weren't for the hard work of several people.

Thanks to Brenda Mulligan, formerly of Addison-Wesley, for the initial concept plus lots of other early help; this book would never have gotten off the ground without her. Thanks to my entire Addison-Wesley teamDebra Williams Cauley; Mary O'Brien; Marty Rabinowitz; Curt Johnson; Tyrrell Albaugh, Noreen Regina; Julie Nahil; Jessica D'Amico; and especially Chris Zahn for reading every word, which would undoubtedly put most nonprogrammers into a coma.

Addison-Wesley also put together a stellar technical-review team. I'd like to thank Eric Chan, Martin Ecker, Jeffery Galinovsky, Bill Licea-Kane, Scott Nations, Marc Olano, Randi Rost, Jeremy Sandmel, Dave Shreiner, and others for lending their expertise and providing insightful feedback and suggestions on the book proposal, sample chapter, and first draft.

Several people enabled the example code. I'm deeply indebted to Hewlett-Packard and my former co-workers Courtney Goeltzenleuchter and Jeff Burrell for providing a Linux box during example source-code development. Thanks to Brian Stempel, who wrote the AGL example code, tested all the example code on the Apple platform, and acted as a consultant on all things Apple. I owe you a beer, Brian. Thanks to artist and travel companion Dean Randazzo, who provided one of his awesome photographs for use as a texture map in the SecondaryColor example. And thanks to my employer, SimAuthor, for the elevation and texture map data of the Grand Teton region used in the TextureMapping example.

SimAuthor also gets my thanks for its support and use of its resources. A further tip of my panama hat to John Platt and Charlie Douglas; playing poker every other week helped keep me sane.

I sincerely appreciate the help of luminaries like Jon Leech at SGI, Mesa creator Brian Paul, Bill Licea-Kane, and several others for patiently answering my questions on OpenGL.

Alex Berry at Seven21 Productions did a great job of converting my childlike scribbles into professional-looking diagrams. Fellow OpenGL developer Chris Hansen at 3D Nature and Matt Gadda at SimAuthor both reviewed sections of the book and provided insightful feedback. Thanks to all of you.

I really have to thank my wife, Deedre Martz. Like any author's spouse, Dee supported me fully while I spent nights and weekends writing this book. But beyond that, she lent her technical-writing expertise. Her feedback is responsible for the professional tone of this book. In fact, I owe most of what I know about technical writing to Dee.

Finally, I'm indebted to Andy Goodrich, Spencer Thomas, and Bert Herzog, who collectively got me started down the 3D graphics path many years ago. Thanks for opening the door to a fascinating career.
