Add a Footnote or Endnote


You can add footnotes or endnotes to a document to provide additional explanatory information or to cite references to other works.

Footnotes are numbered 1, 2, 3, and appear within your document. Endnotes are numbered i, ii, iii, and appear at the end of your document.

  1. Click image from book to display the document in Print Layout view.

  2. Click in the document where you want the footnote or endnote number to appear.

  3. Click Insert.

  4. Click Reference.

  5. Click Footnote.

    The Footnote and Endnote dialog box appears.

  6. Click an option to specify whether you want to insert footnotes or endnotes (image from book changes to image from book).

  7. Click Insert.

    image from book Word displays the footnote or endnote area.

  8. Type the text for the footnote or endnote.

    image from book The number for the footnote or endnote appears both in the body of the document and in the note.

Is there anything I can do if I change my mind and want to use endnotes instead of footnotes?

Yes, you can convert footnotes to endnotes or endnotes to footnotes.

  1. Complete steps 3 to 5 in this section.

  2. Click Convert.

  3. In the Convert Notes dialog box, click OK.

  4. The Cancel button changes to Close; click Close.
