Using Different Headers or Footers Within a Document


You can use different headers or footers in different portions of your document. If you plan to use more than two headers or footers, insert section breaks before you begin. See the section “Insert a Section Break” for details.

  1. Click in the first section for which you want to create a header or footer.

  2. Click View.

  3. Click Header and Footer.

    The text in your document appears dimmed, and the insertion point appears in the Header – Section 1 box.

  4. Type in the Header-Section 1 box.

  5. Click image from book

    image from book The Header-Section 2 or Footer-Section 2 box appears.

    image from book Word unlinks the headers or footers and removes the “Same as Previous” marking from the header or footer.

  6. Type the text you want to appear in this section’s header or footer.

  7. Repeat steps 7 to 9 for each section for which you want a different header or footer.

Can I create different headers or footers for odd or even pages?

Yes, and you do not need to insert section breaks.

  1. Complete steps 2 to 3 in this section.

  2. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the Page Setup icon (image from book changes to image from book Each header or footer box is renamed to Odd Page or Even Page.

  3. Type in the Odd Page Header box or click image from book to switch to the Even Page Header box or the Even Page Footer box.
