Web services are unquestionably a good idea. Providing a multivendor way to expose services running on all kinds of platforms across both intranets and the Internet has the potential to open up the world in a new way. The technologies underlying Web services XML, WSDL, SOAP, and UDDI are all relatively new. Yet despite their recent genesis, all are supported by multiple vendors, and all look likely to play important roles in the future of distributed computing. While browser-based applications have made the Web what it is today, Web services will likely make it what it will be tomorrow.
