Chapter 2. Web Services

In the last ten years, nothing has had a bigger impact on the software world than the Internet and the World Wide Web. Browser-based applications have become the norm as organizations adapt to this new environment. Useful as they are, however, applications that expose their services to browsers aren't the only way to exploit Web technology. Why can't those applications also expose their services programmatically? Allowing software running on other systems to invoke operations over the Web directly would allow Web applications to provide richer services to more diverse clients.

Web services make this possible. Using this new technology, software running on desktops, servers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, or any other intelligent device can directly invoke operations exposed by Web applications. And while applications available on the Internet will be a large part of this new world, applications running on internal networks can also exploit Web services. This new technology is a key part of Microsoft's plans, playing an important role in the .NET initiative. This chapter looks at some of the ways Web services can be used and then examines the core technologies that underlie this idea.

Web services allow accessing software programmatically over the Web
