SUMMARY

Conceptually Web services are relatively straightforward. However, the maze of arcane terms and acronyms that surround Web services can at times create an impenetrable barrier. In this chapter we have sought to break that barrier down, brick by brick, by defining what Web services are, by introducing the enabling concepts behind Web services, and by demystifying the standards and terminology surrounding Web services.

Furthermore, our goal has been to give the reader a solid Web services primer and create a Web services foundation for subsequent chapters.

Our hope is that readers now feel more comfortable with the Web services standards, concepts and terminology, and better appreciate some of the business implications of Web services, and where to leverage Web services in your organization. Subsequent chapters take a deep look at the “How’s?”, “Where’s?” and “When’s?” of Web service implementation from a business perspective, starting with Chapter 3, “Web Services Adoption.”
