Chapter22.Growth

Chapter 22. Growth

There is an important interaction between growth and productivity. A very simple model can enable managers to better understand what occurs as new team members are integrated into an existing organization. While straightforward, the model also permits some interesting predictions; and with some simple graphs, I can show how the various factors interact.

There are no clear answers to all the problems that growth presents, but I believe good managers can learn to manipulate the parameters that define the model. It can pay big dividends to balance organizational development ("OD," with its focus on growth) with project management ("PM," with its focus on productivity). The organization needs to cope with the problems of growth in order to prosper, while the projects it works on need to be concerned with productivity and cost. These two are often seen to be in conflict, requiring delicate trade-offs. I attempt in this chapter to show areas of commonality and ways in which both objectives can be achieved.
