One of the criticisms of the day was that they didn't load enough ballast into the hold to make the boat more stable. Actually, they crammed as much in as they could, but there wasn't enough room. And, even if there had been, making the boat ride lower wouldn't have helped, because in the face of swells, water would have started pouring through the portals of the lower of the two gun decks. Of course, had there been only one gun deck…
