And Immediately Cuts to the Chase

…And Immediately Cuts to the Chase

"Well," Roscoe started off, "it's really quite simple. The boys let me down."

Now Roscoe is not one to point fingers and look for opportunities to spread blame. He is one of those "the buck stops here" kind of guys. So I was curious as to what would lead him to make such a pronouncement.

"It's like this," he continued. "They committed to a deliverable by a certain date, and then they didn't deliver on that date."

I didn't inquire as to whether the slip was a small one or a large one, although I suspected the latter. What intrigued me was how "binary" Roscoe was in his judgment. It seemed to me that he was taking a black-or-white, all-or-nothing position. Wasn't the world better described in shades of gray?

"Surely," I said, "there must have been some extenuating circumstances."

Bad idea.
