Researching Support for New Devices and Versions of Code

As mentioned in the previous section, the supportlists and traps directories contain a listing by device of supported MIB files and traps. However, these listings are guidelines only. There is tremendous variation between different versions of a particular device, between release levels of IOS, and even within a single release level between point releases and between image versions and feature sets. The supportlists provide a good starting point for determining whether a particular device supports a given MIB file. However, it is good to confirm further the support on your particular software release, version, and feature set.

Routers are listed by different models, but all entries here actually point to the file under the routers directory. Basically, the IOS release and version determine support rather than device type. There are, of course, some limitations to the precision of these entries. For example, if you drill down through the 2511 entry, you will find the ATM-MIB listed as of IOS 11.2. However, the 2511 has no ATM interfaces, so obviously does not support this MIB. Exceptions such as these are why we emphasize that these listings are guidelines only.

After you have narrowed down the support information, there is a useful undocumented hidden enable-level IOS command for the routers that shows all MIBs supported by the IOS currently running on that router:

 show snmp mib

This command will list all implemented MIB objects for that router. It is a very useful command for verifying support of a certain MIB object on a given router.
