Summary

Within this chapter, the tools to correlate sub-interfaces and virtual circuits with various other performance and fault variables have been covered. Probably the capability to use the cfrExtCircuitTable to accomplish this correlation is one of the more useful skills when it comes to supporting Frame Relay circuits.

However, as stated earlier, the variables needed to identify application or user traffic at a lower level are not available through SNMP. One method that could be used is some form of accounting netflow, MAC accounting, IP accounting or IPX accounting to gather this information. For instance, information about MAC accounting, the ARP cache, and a BGP routing table can be correlated and used to identify BGP neighbor changes. The tradeoff is that router performance will be degraded with the addition of an accounting method.

The next chapter continues the discussion of wide area networking and network management by examining ISDN and dial networks.
