Previewing Images in a Slideshow

Slideshows are an excellent way to showcase your work. You can use them to create a presentation for clients, to display event images, or to run in the background at an event. They're also one of the best ways to preview your images. Let's create a slideshow now of the images in the web journal to gauge the impression they'll make.

1.

Choose File > Slideshow or press Shift-S.

The Run Slideshow window appears.

The slideshow displays all the images in the current album or project. In this case, the slideshow displays all of the images in our web journal album, which is based on the Five Star Locations Smart Album.

2.

Choose Slideshow Preset > 4-Up Slow. This preset displays four images on a grid, showing them for three seconds each. Then the first image is replaced with the fifth in a two-second cross fade, and so on.

3.

Click the Start button to begin the slideshow.

The slideshow begins, with the images appearing one at a time until four of them are onscreen. Then, the images successively cross-fade new images into place. The slideshow will continuously loop.

4.

Press the Esc key to end the slideshow.

The presets are wonderfully designed, but there are number of options available when you create your own preset.

5.

Press Shift-S to open the Run Slideshow window again, and then choose Slideshow Preset > Edit. The Slideshow Presets window appears.

6.

Select 4-Up Slow from the Presets list on the left and click the Add (+) button in the lower left corner to create a new preset based on 4-Up Slow.

7.

Name the new preset 2-Up Slow and press Return.

8.

Drag the Columns slider to 1 and the Padding slider to 4 pixels, and then click OK.

After these changes, the images appear in a single column in the slideshow and the space, or padding, between the two images is reduced.

Tip

Using the controls at the bottom of the Slideshow Presets dialog, you can also add music to your slideshow from an iTunes playlist. And using the Quality options in the upper right corner of the dialog, you can choose the Good setting, which loads more quickly onscreen.

9.

Click Start to play the 2-Up Slow slideshow.

The slideshow now displays two images at a time onscreen. This allows you to concentrate your evaluation on fewer images at a time.

10.

Press the spacebar to pause the slideshow; press the spacebar a second time to resume the slideshow.

A partially transparent triangle momentarily appears onscreen to indicate pause or playback mode.

11.

Press the right arrow key to advance the slideshow manually; press the left arrow to move backward through the slideshow.

12.

Press Esc to end the slideshow.

As you can see, slideshows are a terrific way to review images. Now that you have previewed the images in your web journal, it's time to export them for the clients to view.
