Using the Lift and Stamp Tools

Very often, similar adjustments must be applied to multiple images. Aperture allows you to easily copy an adjustment from one image and apply it to another image or group of images using the Lift and Stamp tools. Many of our Jackson Hole images have sensor dust in the same location. Instead of using the Spot & Patch tool on each image, let's use the Lift and Stamp tools to apply the cleanup from the last image to all of the affected images.

1.

Make sure Jackson Hole 6 of 23 through Jackson Hole 19 of 23 are selected in the Browser.

2.

Click the Lift tool in the toolbar (the second tool from the right) or press O to select it. The Lift & Stamp HUD appears.

3.

Drag the Lift & Stamp HUD over the Browser so you can see all of the images in the Viewer.

4.

Using the Lift tool, click the Jackson Hole 6 of 23 image, which you adjusted using the Spot & Patch tool.

Clicking the image selects it and lifts, or copies, the adjustments of the image to the Lift and Stamp tools' memory. When you click, the tool automatically changes from the Lift tool to the Stamp tool (from an up to a down arrow), ready to apply the lifted adjustments to another image or group of images. The tool has lifted not only the image's adjustments but also its ratings and metadata. Since we only care about copying the Spot & Patch adjustment, let's disable the other items.

5.

Click the Adjustments disclosure triangle in the Lift & Stamp HUD to see the Spot & Patch item. Then, deselect all the RAW Fine Tuning, Main Rating, IPTC, and Custom information items.

6.

Close the Lift & Stamp HUD, then select Jackson Hole 7 of 23. Press Option-R to show only the primary image in the Viewer. Click the Stamp tool. Since the image was shot on the same shoot on the same camera, the sensor dust is in approximately the same location at the top of the image, just left of center.

7.

Position the cursor near the sensor dust and press Z to zoom in on the image in the Viewer.

8.

Click the image with the Stamp tool. The sensor dust disappears, this time because we copied the adjustment from the first image.

A third image, Jackson Hole 17 of 23, also needs to have sensor dust removed, but zooming in on Jackson Hole 7 of 23 in the Viewer caused Jackson Hole 17 of 23 to become deselected. Fortunately, we can stamp the adjustment on an image in the Browser by simply clicking in it.

9.

Click the Jackson Hole 17 of 23 image in the Browser to apply the Stamp tool correction to it.

10.

Press Z to zoom back out of the Viewer, and then press Option-U to return the Viewer to the Multi Viewer mode. Some of the Jackson Hole images are still selected. Hold down the Shift key and press the right arrow key several times until Jackson Hole 6 of 23 through Jackson Hole 19 of 23 are selected.

11.

Click the Stamp Selected Images button in the Lift & Stamp HUD. This copies the Spot & Patch adjustment to all the selected images; images that have already undergone the Spot & Patch adjustment are unchanged. There is no additive effect.

Tip

You can also apply the Lift & Stamp adjustment to multiple images by clicking the first image of a selection and then Shift-clicking the last image of a group. Simply clicking an image within a selection does not apply the adjustment to multiple images.

12.

Close the Lift & Stamp HUD by clicking the circled X or pressing the A key to switch to the Selection tool.

The Spot & Patch adjustment worked well on all the images except for the Jackson Hole 9 of 23 image. Next, we will blend the adjustment and make it less obvious.
