Creating a Standalone Application

The workflow that we built in the previous exercise is handy, but you need to open Automator to run it. Well, you can take this workflow even further: In fact, you can create a standalone application that you can run directly from the Finder.

To give you more options let's also deselect the specific album we nominated earlier in our workflow.

1.

In the Choose Albums action, click the Options disclosure triangle, and select the Show Action When Run checkbox.

2.

Deselect the album you selected before.

Now, at runtime, the workflow will display this list of albums and allow you to select one. Obviously, if you want the workflow to always export the same album, then there's no need to select this box. Using it provides more flexibility.

3.

Choose File > Save As.

4.

Choose Application from the File Format pop-up menu, and then click Save.

Automator will save your workflow as a standalone application.

5.

Quit Automator and find the application you just created. Double-click it, and your workflow should prompt you for an Aperture album to export and then run through all the steps it did before.

Creating standalone applications provides a simple, intuitive way to access your custom workflows. However, for some tasks, you might want to employ even more automation.
