Authoring a Disc of Final Images

Delivering the images to a client is the culmination of postproduction. The images are sorted and adjusted and it's time to put the project to rest.

Authoring a CD is straightforward: you can use Mac OS X's built-in Burn command. The process for authoring a DVD is identical.

1.

Insert a blank CD into your Mac's optical disc drive.

The CD icon appears on your desktop.

Note

The behavior that occurs when you insert a CD is user-definable. The first time you insert a blank CD, you are prompted with some choices. This exercise presumes that Open Finder is your default action. To view and change the default behavior, open the System Preferences and choose CDs & DVDs.

2.

In Aperture, click an image inside the Grande Favorites Smart Album.

3.

Press Command-A to select all of the images in the Browser.

4.

Choose File > Export Versions or press Command-Shift-E.

The Export dialog appears. As with printing, you can create an export preset to use regularly in your workflow. Let's do so now.

5.

Choose Edit from the Export Preset pop-up menu.

The Export Presets dialog appears.

6.

Select PSD Original Size (16-bit) in the Export Preset Name pop-up menu then click the Add (+) button to create a new preset based on the one you have selected.

7.

Name the preset PSD Original Size (16-bit) 300dpi no meta and press Return.

The delivery format should be agreed upon with your client. In this case, Grande has requested 300-dpi, 16-bit color images in the Adobe Photoshop format, PSD.

Note

The term dpi (dots per inch) is used in printing and does not affect image file size.

8.

Deselect the Include Metadata checkbox, enter 300 in the DPI field, and choose Adobe RGB (1998) from the ColorSync Profile pop-up menu. Adobe RGB (1998) is the profile used by the digital camera. There is no need to attach metadata.

9.

Click OK.

10.

Back in the Export dialog, navigate to the CD on your desktop.

11.

Make sure that the Export Preset is PSD Original Size (16-bit) 300dpi no meta, and that the Export Name Format is Current Version Name.

12.

Click Export.

Aperture applies your adjustments using the original RAW files to create new 16-bit PSD files of the images. Your original RAW files are never touched. When it finishes, you can burn the CD.

13.

In the Finder, name the CD on the desktop Grande CD.

14.

Control-click the disc icon and choose Burn Disc from the contextual menu.

15.

In the window that appears, confirm the disc name is Grande CD (change it if necessary), and make sure that the Burn Speedwhich will depend on your driveis low. Lower speed burns are advisable for critical data because they are more reliable and less susceptible to media inconsistencies.

16.

Click Burn.

The Burn window appears and shows the progress of the burn.

17.

When the CD is burned, open at least one of the files on the disc to check it.

Note

Many photographers like to open all the files on an authored disc to verify there are no problems with file integrity.

18.

Eject the CD.

Congratulations. You can send the disc to Grandebut you're not quite finished with the project. The final step in the workflow is backing up your images.
