Exporting a Web Journal

When you're ready to publish a web journal, Aperture presents you with two options: You can export the webpages to HTML and save them on your hard disk, after which you can email the pages to a client, manually post them on a website, or make them available on an FTP site for a client to download. Or, you can publish the web journal directly to a .Mac site. We'll learn both processes here.

Exporting to HTML

We'll start by exporting the web journal as a self-contained HTML website.

1.

Click the Export Web Pages button in the lower right of the Webpage Editor.

An export dialog appears, letting you specify where you want to save the web journal. Let's use a folder that has already been created for this project.

2.

Navigate to APTS_Aperture_book_files > Lessons > Lesson05 > Web Export.

3.

Choose Detail Image Preset > Web Detail JPEG Best Quality. Leave the Thumbnail Image Preset set to the default High Quality setting.

4.

In the Export As field, name the journal GrandeLocations (no space), and then click the Export button.

An Exporting window appears indicating how long it will take to generate the web journal. It may take several minutes as Aperture goes back to the original RAW files and processes any adjustments you have made to generate the final webpages.

When Aperture is finished, you can check the results by viewing the pages in a web browser.

5.

In the Finder, navigate to the APTS_Aperture_book_files > Lessons > Lesson05 > Web Export > GrandeLocations folder on your hard disk.

6.

Double-click index.html.

Your default web browser should open and display the main index page of the Proposed Locations web journal.

7.

Click the page links if desired to navigate the site. Click any image thumbnail to view its detail page. When you're finished, you can make the site available to the client in any of several ways, including manually uploading it to a web server. Check with your Internet service provider for instructions. If you have a .Mac account, it's easier to publish the journal to the web, as you'll see now.

Publishing to .Mac

If you have a .Mac account, it's much easier to publish the web journal.

1.

In the Webpage Editor in Aperture, click the Publish to .Mac button.

Note

If your .Mac account is not already set up, you will be prompted to configure it. It's a good idea to have your account configured before you publish a web journal to it.

2.

In the dialog that appears, type GrandeLocations in the Publish Album As field.

Tip

The name you enter in the Publish Album As field will be part of the site's URL, so avoid using spaces or special characters.

3.

Choose Detail Image Preset > Web Detail JPEG Best Quality, and leave the Thumbnail Image Preset set to the default High Quality setting.

4.

Click the Publish button.

An Exporting window appears showing Aperture's progress as it generates the webpages. When it's finished, a Publish Complete window appears, offering you the option to preview the web journal in a browser.

Note

There may be an extended pause between the Exporting and Publish Complete windows while the web journal uploads.

5.

Click the View in Browser button.

Your default web browser opens and displays the main index page of the web journal.

That's it. Now you can email the clients and direct them to your .Mac URL to view the images.

Congratulations! In this lesson you created and uploaded a web journal. Web journalsand their cousins, web galleriesare an excellent way for clients to review your work. You'll learn how to create a web gallery for an online portfolio in Lesson 10,"Advanced Output."

Over the course of these five lessons, you have done quite a bit of work to your Library. In the real world, now would be an excellent time to back up all the valuable data that you've created so far. However, we'll learn how to back up and archive your Aperture Library and images in Lesson 7, "Delivering and Archiving Images."
