The Intrusion Detection Systems Consortium

The Intrusion Detection Systems Consortium (IDSC) was created on the basis of the International Computer Security Organization (ICSA), which was renamed the TruSecure company in October of 2000. The main goal of the IDSC was to combine developer efforts in the field of intrusion detection technologies. This consortium (http://www.icsalabs.com/HTML/communities/ids/index.sHTML) is open, and can be joined by any intrusion detection system manufacturer. IDSC is engaged in developing user training programs, IDS evaluation criteria, etc.

One of the first documents published by this consortium is the "IDS Buyers Guide" [ICSA1-00], released in December of 1999. Unfortunately, this document remains the only one that the consortium has produced. This guide is intended for training in the field of intrusion detection and security scanning. It also describes criteria to be taken into account when choosing intrusion detection systems and security scanners. The appendix to this document contains a list of 30 intrusion detection systems and security scanners, both commercial and freeware.

Currently, the following manufacturers are participants in IDSC:

  • Computer Associates, Inc.

  • Cisco Systems, Inc.

  • IntruVert Networks

  • NER Security

  • SecureWorks

  • Sourcefire, Inc.

  • Tripwire, Inc.
