Chapter 1. Introduction to Streaming Audio

Most people shake their heads in bewilderment at the mention of "streaming audio." The audio part's all right, they may think, but they're not so sure about the "streaming" bit.

Throughout recorded history humanity has made music. Once a person hears a good song, it's a safe bet that they wouldn't mind hearing it again. Composers and performers are asked for an encore, Thomas Edison invents a technology and tools to capture songs and take them anywhere. This portability rapidly evolves with the phonograph record, the airwaves, the cassette tape, the compact disc, and only recently to computers. It's only natural that someone would create a system to transfer songs between computers linked to the Internet. Streaming audio is that system.
