Back in the dark ages of the early 1980s, systems connected to each other via phone lines speaking UUCP (Unix-to-Unix Copy Protocol). This functionality still lingers in OpenBSD, much like your veriform appendix. While it is expected to work, its usefulness is greatly limited.
