Installing Contribute Publishing Services

The Contribute Publishing Services program is distributed directly from the Macromedia Website. Downloads are available for Windows, Linux, and Solaris servers in an easy-to-use installation package; you can download a 30-day trial version free of charge.

In this lesson, you'll download and install CPS onto your local Web server. After the installation is complete, you'll step through the initial configuration process.

Note

For the purposes of this tutorial, all installation steps and screen shots are from the Windows version of CPS.

1.

To download CPS or any other software from Macromedia, you need to be logged in as amember of Macromedia. If you're not currently a member, go to http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/membership/index.cfm and join. If you're already a member and logged in, clickthe Your Account link at the top of the Macromedia navigation bar and enter your passwordto sign in.

Previously registered members who have checked the Remember Me option are signed in automatically.

Installing Contribute Publishing Services on Linux or Solaris Servers

Unlike the Windows installation process for CPS, there is no graphical user interface when installing on Linux or Solaris servers; the installation is carried out at the command line.

From a command shell, begin by switching to the directory storing your download and entering the name of the downloaded file (CPSLin.bin or CPSSol.bin). After the binary has been unpacked, the installation process begins. You need to choose your locale (English is the default language), followed by the type of installation desired: either simple, with the integrated JRun 4 module; or as a Web Archive (WAR) file for manual deployment. Next, you need to choose an installation path or accept the offered default and then enter an administrative password.

After the files are installed, you'll be told where the main program can be accessed and which scripts have been created to start, stop, or uninstall CPS.

2.

In your browser, enter http://www.macromedia.com/go/wps_trial/ in the Location or URL field and press Enter. If you see the Macromedia Trial downloads page, go to step 3.If you're newly registered, Macromedia asks that you verify your email address; if it's correct, click Continue. If your email address is incorrect, click Change. An email message with theproper download link will be sent to the provided address. When the email from Macromediaarrives, open it and click the provided link. If your email client doesn't support clickable links, copy the URL and paste it into your browser's Location or URL field.

Note

Alternatively, visit http://www.macromedia.com/software/webpublishingsystem/cps/.Click Trial under the Downloads column on the right, or click the Free 30-day Trial text link to start the download process.

Macromedia provides an email message with a specially coded link to its downloads page.

3.

At the Macromedia Trial Downloads page, choose the desired version from the Contribute Publishing Services list for your language and operating system. To follow along in this tutorial, choose English - Windows and click Download. When the File Download dialog box appears, click Save and choose an easily accessible location (such as the desktop) to store the downloading file CPSWin.exe.

At the time of this writing, the file to be downloaded is just under 48MB, so a high-speed Internet connection is definitely recommended. Macromedia has indicated that one of the reasons the CPS is available only by download is to make frequent updates possible; consequently, the file size might be different when you get it.

4.

Locate the downloaded file and double-click it to begin the installation process. In the title screen of the installer, make sure that English is chosen in the language list and click OK. When the Welcome screen appears, click Next to proceed with the installation.

The basic Welcome screen remains in view throughout the installation. As each significant step is achieved, the corresponding item on the left is checked as completed.

5.

After reading the license agreement that appears, click the "I accept the terms of the License Agreement" option and then click Next. When presented with the choice between Simple Installation and WAR file, choose Simple Installation; click Next to continue.

The Simple Installation assumes that you don't already have a J2EE application server available and installs one (Macromedia JRun 4) for you. If you select the WAR option, the installer generates a Web Archive (WAR) format file that must be deployed as part of the J2EE server.

6.

The CPS installer presents the preferred installation directory; select Next to accept the default option. In the following screen, enter a password ( designdeploy) to grant access to the CPS user interface; you have to re-enter the password to confirm it. When you're done, click Next.

The password is required whenever the administrative front end of CPS is launched. Depending on the structure of your information technology group, this password might or might not be different from the one used to administer Contribute. If the same person is handling both chores, you can use the same code word.

7.

The Installation Summary displays your choices; click Install to proceed with the installation. After all the files are copied to the appropriate locations and the other installation chores are finished, the Installation Complete screen is presented. If you want to review the release notes, click the "View readme file" option. Click Done.

Note

The Installation Complete screen displays an important bit of information: the Macromedia Contribute Publishing Services Web address for your system. This is the base address for CPS files; a typical address is https://localhost:8900/contribute. The https designation indicates that the secure HTTP protocol is being used, and 8900 is the port number used by CPS.
