Channel the power of the Address Book in Mail

Task #87

Difficulty Level 2

The Address Book application in Panther is a central repository for all your contact information. It stores names, addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and many other bits of information. The Address Book does a good job of helping you organize all of this information, but this is only part of its true power. The Address Book can also play nicely with the rest of the applications on your Mac. Rather than have this type of data stored multiple times in different applications, it makes sense to store it once in the Address Book. From there, the other applications can access the information. Many different applications already support the Address Book protocol.

For example, the Address Book works in conjunction with the Mail application. If you enter e-mail addresses for your various contacts in the Address Book, you can use them in Mail to send e-mails.

Customize It

To export an address from the Addresses window in Mail, z+click the person’s name whom you would like to export. Choose the Export Vcard menu item to save the address as a file. You can attach this Vcard file to send e-mail addresses from your Address Book to others.

Did You Know?

As you use the addresses in Mail, you can continue to make changes to the Address Book application. When you switch back to Mail, its address list reflects the changes that you made in the Address Book.
