Fix Problems with User Accounts

Task #74

Difficulty Level 2

If more than one person is using your Macintosh — either from the local keyboard or across a network — then you have turned it into a multiuser powerhouse. Mac OS X does a great job of keeping personal documents secure and even maintains different desktop and application settings for each user that you create. Everyone’s documents are kept separate and secure as well because each user has his or her own Home folder. A classroom Macintosh is a good example of a shared multiuser computer; each student has an account, and the teacher uses the Admin account, the primary account created when you first set up Mac OS X.

However, if a person suddenly cannot log in or you have to tweak the capabilities of a user, you need to go troubleshooting in System Preferences; you can use the settings found on the Accounts pane. This procedure assumes that you are logging in as the Admin account.

Caution

Assigning a user an Admin account allows him to make changes within System Preferences and also allows him greater access to documents and applications within Panther: Therefore, assign Admin privileges only to those who require higher access or experienced Mac OS X users whom you trust.

Customize It!

If you no longer need to display the Login window and you will be the only one using your Macintosh, you can set it to automatically log you in. Click the Login Options button at the bottom of the Accounts list and click the Automatically Log In As check box to enable it; then choose your account from the drop-down list box. Do not forget to delete any old user accounts that you no longer need!
