Add a New Event in iCal

Task #52

Difficulty Level 2

Panther includes a great calendar and time management application called iCal, which you can use to track appointments and manage To Do items — complete with alarms and repeating schedules. In fact, if you subscribe to Apple’s .Mac service, you can share your iCal calendars online with others and set up appointments based on the calendars that others share online. Within iCal, you can prioritize your events and To Do items to help you stay organized and, if necessary, create multiple calendars for home and office.

When iCal is combined with iSync (see Task 40), you will see that your events, appointments, and To Do items can be shared among all of your portable devices — which includes many mobile phones and PDAs, as well as your iPod and laptop. You can also save your iCal data to a disk file; exporting is useful for backups and trading calendars directly among friends and coworkers.

Did You Know?

It is always a good idea to keep a separate backup of your iCal data; in fact, I keep three backup copies, each a month apart. That way, I am able to access past appointments and events that I have recently deleted in my current iCal data. To export your iCal data to a disk file, click File → Export and type a name in the Save As box; then click Export.

Did You Know?

If you are currently using Microsoft’s Entourage e-mail and calendar application, you can effortlessly import that data into iCal without retyping a single character. Just click File → Import and then choose Import Entourage data from the Import dialog box. iCal will open Entourage and take care of the rest. Note that iCal can also import standard vCal data files from other applications.
