Run Multiple Versions of Mac OS

Depending on the model of Macintosh you are using, Panther may be able to boot directly into Mac OS 9 — or, if you have more than one hard drive or a network connection, you may have access to bootable installations of different versions of Mac OS X. For example, I keep the current version of Mac OS X on one drive and the latest beta of the new version on my external FireWire drive.

You can switch between operating systems in System Preferences.

Caution

It is important to connect and power on any external drives before you open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences; otherwise, the operating systems installed on those drives will not be displayed in the list.
