Chapter 10. Routing and Switching Protocols

Upon completing this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Explain the meaning of key networking terms based on the context

  • Describe the effect of routing loops

  • Differentiate between the types of routing protocols

  • List the routing and switching protocols used by Ethernet, IP, and Fibre Channel (FC)

  • Recite some of the key characteristics of each routing and switching protocol

This chapter provides a brief introduction to the concepts and protocols related to routing and switching within Ethernet, IP, and FC networks. Many books have been written on the topic of routing and switching protocols, so this chapter does not delve into the details of the topic. This chapter seeks only to provide an overview of routing and switching protocols for readers who do not have a networking background. Multicast protocols are not covered.
