Deleting Images

You can delete an image in Aperture by selecting it and pressing Command-Delete. However, depending on whether the image is a version or a master, different things will happen.

For example, Figure 5.64 shows two images. The first image is the master image that was imported. A second image was then created and a Color Monochrome adjustment was applied to it. If you delete either the first or second version, then that version will simply disappear from your library, and that deletion is immediately undoable. The only thing deleted will be the small text file containing the list of edits that make up the specifics of that version.

Figure 5.64. These two images are both versions of the same master file.

If you delete one version and then later select the sole remaining version and press Command-Delete, you will be presented with the Delete Versions dialog box (Figure 5.65). When you delete the last remaining version of an image, Aperture will also delete the original master file that is associated with that version. (You'll get this same dialog box if you delete both versions at once, because you'll effectively be deleting all images associated with that one master.)

Figure 5.65. If you delete the last remaining version of an image, Aperture will also delete the original master file.

Note, too, that if you select a closed stack, even one containing dozens of images, and click Command-Delete, all versions in that stack will be deleted. If you end up deleting all of the versions associated with a particular master file, the same Delete Versions dialog box will appear. (You won't get this warning if there is another version of a master image somewhere else in your project.)

Undeleting Images

When Aperture deletes a master image from a project, it places it in the Finder's Trash, in a folder called Aperture. This Aperture trash folder is further divided by project name. If you want to undelete an image, you can pull it out of the Trash and reimport it into Aperture. Aperture's trashed files are deleted any time you empty the Trash.

Deleted versions are not recoverable; only master files can be undeleted.
