Restoring Your Windows System

If you ever need to restore your Windows system, you can use the disk image you made in the preceding section to copy all your files back onto your Windows partition. This will restore your Windows installation to the same state it was in when you made the image.

To restore your Windows system, follow these steps:

1.

If you're not already in it, boot into Mac OS X.

On your desktop, you should see separate drives for the Mac and Windows partitions.

2.

Open the Windows partition.

3.

Press Command-A to select all the files in the partition.

4.

Press Command-Delete to move the files to the Trash.

5.

Hold down the Option key, and choose Finder > Empty Trash.

Note

The Option key tells the Mac to empty files that are locked.

6.

Double-click the image that you created in the preceding section.

It will mount on your desktop and appear as a volume.

7.

Open the mounted image file.

8.

Press Command-A to select all the files in the image.

9.

Drag the selection to your Windows partition to commence copying.

10.

When the copy is finished, reboot into Windows.

Your system should appear exactly as it did when you made the image file. In addition to restoring your system to exactly the state that it was in when you made the disc image, you'll find that this technique is substantially faster than reformatting the partition and running the Windows installer again.
