The current version of Windows SharePoint Services is 3.0; we refer to this version throughout the book unless otherwise stated. Previous versions include:
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
Microsoft SharePoint Team Services
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 provides many new, enhanced, and updated features in comparison with its predecessors. The new features include the following:
New navigation aides, such as breadcrumbs and tree view, that enable easy, intuitive website navigation
Blogs that enable you to maintain the online diary environment
Wikis that enable you and your team to capture and share knowledge
Data syndication with RSS
Recycle Bin that allow you to restore the accidentally removed documents
Folder and item-level access control that allows you to specify permissions on a granular level
Rights-trimmed interface where users see only those items and links on the web-page that they can actually access
Mobile access to your SharePoint site
In addition, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 integration with 2007 Microsoft Office system programs has been strongly enhanced, including offline support (Office Outlook, Office Access) and content type support (Office Excel, Office PowerPoint, Office Word). Another new feature is two-way synchronization with Office Groove workspaces.
