(Optional) Using the STP Site Templates

To create a practice site for a chapter based on a site template STP file provided on the CD, perform the following steps:

OPEN the top-level SharePoint site to which you would like to upload the STP files. If prompted, type your user name and password, and click OK.

BE SURE TO verify that you have sufficient rights to upload to the site template gallery of a site collection. If in doubt, see the Appendix.

1. On the Site Actions menu, click Site Settings to display the Site Settings page.

2. In the Galleries section, click Site templates to display the site template gallery page.

3. In the toolbar, click Upload to display the Upload Template: site template gallery page.

4. Click the Browse button to display the Choose File dialog box.

5. Navigate to Documents\Microsoft Press\ SBS_WSSv3\Chapter XX (where XX is the chapter number), click the STP file that you want to use to create the new site, and then click the Open button.

6. Click the OK button once to complete the upload and a second time to take the default properties. The site template gallery page will redisplay.

Use the following steps to create a new child site based upon the uploaded template:

1. Browse to the SharePoint site that you’d like to be the parent of the new practice site.

2. On the Site Actions menu, click Create to display the Create page.

3. In the Web Pages section, click Site and Workspaces to display the New SharePoint Site page.

4. In the Title text box, type a logical name for the new site; you could simply provide the chapter number if you like, for example Chapter06.

5. Optionally, in the Description text box, type a description, fox example SharePoint SBS Chapter 6 Practice Site.

6. In the URL name text box, repeat the same name as you typed into the Title text box.

7. On the Custom tab in the Template Selection section, choose the name of the template that you just uploaded; for example, Chapter 11 Starter.

8. You can leave all the other options as their default values and click the Create button.

The Home page of the new practice site is displayed.
