Web sites based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services use a technology known as Web Part Pages, which are special Web pages that contain one or more Web Parts. Web Parts are reusable components that can contain any type of Web-based information including analytical, collaborative, and database information. This technology enables Web sites to be flexible and highly customizable. To customize these sites, you can use three types of tools.
A browser
A Windows SharePoint Services–compatible Web page editing tool, such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007
Programmatically, a tool such as Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005
No one tool can do everything, and therefore it is likely that in any deployment of Windows SharePoint Services, all three tools will be used at some period of time.
This chapter introduces the basic concepts of Web Part Pages and Web Parts. By using the browser, you will learn how to view Web Part Pages in different ways, as well as how to change the appearance of Web Part Pages by adding and removing Web Parts and by tailoring a site by adding Web Part Pages.
