Versioning

A wiki in Windows SharePoint Services is implemented as a document library and therefore has all of the features of a document library, such as history and version management. Therefore, no amendments are lost. Major versioning is turned on by default when you create a wiki page library. You can also make use of content approval and workflow, as well as restrict the rights as to who can publish and edit Wiki pages. One useful capability of wikis in Windows SharePoint Services is to add metadata columns to the wiki page library. The metadata appears at the bottom of the Wiki page and can be used for page classification.

In the following exercise, you will view the history of a Wiki page, observe the changes to the Wiki page, and then revert back to the previous copy of the Wiki page.

OPEN the SharePoint site in which the wiki page library exists. The exercise will use the http://wideworldimporters site and the WideWorldImporters History wiki page library, but you can use whatever site and wiki page library you want. If prompted, type your user name and password, and then click OK.

BE SURE TO complete the exercises in this chapter before beginning this exercise.

1. On the Quick Launch, under Documents, click WideWorldImporters History. The home page of the WideWorldImporters History wiki page library appears.

2. Click the History button.

You are taken to the History page of the Wiki home page. In the Wiki Content area, deletions have a blue background with a strikethrough font, and additions have a light orange background color. In the left navigation pane, each version of the Wiki page is listed with the date and time that the version was created.

3. In the left navigation pane, under Versions, click 4.0. The fourth version of the Wiki page is displayed.

4. Click the Restore this version button. A Windows Internet Explorer window Restore Thisappears.

5. Click OK to replace the current version of the Wiki page with the selected version. The Wiki home page is displayed.

The words Seating Furniture are dashed and underlined and therefore point to a nonexistent Wiki page.
