Part III: The Enterprise Impact of Backup Systems

 < Day Day Up >

Summary

In this chapter we covered quite a bit of ground, from capacity planning techniques and dividing our backup domains, to exploring the different types of networks that may be used to increase the performance of our backup environment. Here are the highlights of what we covered:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of multiple- and lone-master backup servers

  • How to determine additional resource needs

  • When to add more device hosts

    • Evaluating your network for bottlenecks

    • Adding more backup hardware

  • When to add more tape drives

  • Tape technologies

  • Alternative network solutions

We could probably dedicate an entire book to the topics in this chapter, and if the demand is there, we just might do that. Until then, this should give you a good solid foundation on which to build your backup architecture decisions.
