This Chapter presented you with an introduction to the Finder, your main tool to access the data hidden on your machine. You learned how to interact with the windows and folders that display the applications and documents within your Mac. You learned how to work with volumes, ejecting and even burning new ones! Also, Expos , Apple’s new window control tool has been introduced, making it possible to switch between open windows and applications with ease, as well as enabling you to open items on your desktop with minimal clicking. After reading this Chapter, you know how to do the following:

  • Use the Finder-specific menus, Finder, Go, and View.

  • Create new Finder windows.

  • Switch among Finder’s icon, list, and column view modes.

  • Recognize the active window and make other windows active.

  • Interact with icons in all view modes — selecting them by typing or with the mouse, selecting multiple items.

  • Interact with folders, opening, resizing, and applying Folder Actions.

  • Burn CDs and DVDs using the Finder.

  • Put unwanted items in the Trash, and empty the Trash to delete them and use Secure Delete to eradicate files from prying techs or hackers.

  • Use Expos to manage the many possible open windows and applications presented by Mac OS X.
