radio buttons

A group of displayed controls that let you select one setting from a group. They work like the station presets on a car radio. Just as you can select only one radio station at a time, you can select only one radio button from a group.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

Physical dynamic memory built into the computer in the form of electronic chips or small circuit boards called DIMMs or SODIMMs.

RAM disk

Memory that is set aside to be used as if it were a very fast hard drive.

raster image

An image made of lines of discrete dots for the display screen or the printer. Compare to vector image.

record

A structured collection of data in AppleScript (and in other programming languages), in which each data item has a name and a value.

regular expression

A shorthand method of expressing a string of characters or various permutations of a string of characters. Used in Unix command lines.

relative path

A path that does not begin with a slash character (/) and is therefore assumed to start in the current folder.

Rendezvous

A networking technology requiring zero configuration. Turn on the device, and your computer can see it and use it. As it is a new technology, older devices typically will not have support for Rendezvous available.

repeat loop

An arrangement of AppleScript commands that begins with a Repeat command and ends with an End Repeat command. AppleScript executes the commands between the Repeat and End Repeat commands for the number of times specified in the Repeat command.

resolution

The horizontal and vertical dimensions of a display, measured in pixels. Also refers to the perceived smoothness of a displayed or printed image. Printed resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi). A high-resolution image has more dots per inch than a low-resolution image.

resolve an alias

What Mac OS X does to find the original item that is represented by an alias.

resources

Information such as text, menus, icons, pictures, or patterns used by Mac OS X, an application, or other software. Also refers to a computer’s processing power, memory, and disk space.

rip

To convert tracks from audio CDs typically into MP3 or AAC format. The first step to really irritating the RIAA.

RIP (Raster Image Processor)

Software that translates PostScript code into an image made of lines of dots.

ROM (Read Only Memory)

Non-editable information, typically located within a hardware device, with specifications as to the device’s behavior. Compare to RAM.

root

The name of the user account that has control over all folders and files on a computer, including the contents of the normally off-limits System folder. Root is also used as a term for the top-level directory of a file system.

root level

The main level of a disk, which is what you see when you open the disk icon.

router
